Japan Open 2023: PV Sindhu knocked out in first round again, Satwik-Chirag advance to next round

PV Sindhu, a double Olympic medalist, lost in straight games against Zhang Yi Man of China in the opening round of the Japan Open on Wednesday. Sindhu lost 12-21 13-21 in a 32-minute match, making her 8th first-round elimination in 13 BWF World Tour tournaments this year.

Following her injury recovery, the former world champion has been a shadow of her past self, dropping to world No. 17 following a string of first-round exits. Even against lower-ranked opponents, she has been prone to errors and has struggled to finish points.

Sindhu defeated world number 18 Zhang in the Malaysian Open quarterfinals in May of this year, however, the Chinese avenged that defeat and also made the lifetime win-loss record to 3-2 against the Indian.

While Sindhu was struggling, the in-form doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had no such problems, defeating the Indonesian duo of Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin 21-16 11-21 21-13 to advance to the second round. Satwik and Chirag, who won the Korean Open championship on Sunday, will clash with the Danish duo of Jeppe Bay and Lasse Molhede in the 2nd round.

Lakshya Sen also had a successful opening round of the BWF Super 750  tournament after defeating fellow countryman Priyanshu Rajawat 21-15, 12-21, 24-22. In the second round, he takes on Japanese opponent Kanta Tsuneyama.
