Low-pressure over Bay of Bengal set to bring heavy rains across central India and west coast

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area has formed over the west-central and adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal, off the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha. It is expected to develop into a depression over the course of the next day, bringing with it heavy and widespread rainfall over central India and the west coast.

Over the next seven days, Goa, Maharashtra (including Mumbai), and Gujarat are expected to see heavy to extremely heavy rains. According to the IMD, “extremely heavy rain is likely over the Konkan (including Mumbai) and Goa, Ghat areas of Madhya (central) Maharashtra until August 19; Gujarat until August 20; Saurashtra on August 19 and 20; with rain activities peaking on August 19.”

Over the next two days, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha are all expected to experience heavy to extremely heavy rains. According to the report, there was “single, exceptionally heavy rain over coastal Andhra Pradesh during August 17–18, and Odisha and Telangana on August 18.”

The Western Himalayas and foothills, especially Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh, have had the most intense rainfall activity thus far. Right now, the monsoon trough is situated south of where it usually is. At 5.30 am Indian Standard Time (IST) on Sunday, an upper air cyclonic circulation caused a new low-pressure system to form over the west-central and adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal, near the shores of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha.

During the next 24 hours, it is expected to deepen into a depression, move west-northwest, and cross the shores of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha on August 19. The low-pressure system that developed over south Chhattisgarh on Saturday has since shifted west-northwest and is now over Vidarbha and the surrounding regions. As a leftover cyclonic circulation, it is predicted to continue its west-northwestward movement, gradually weaken, and arrive near Gujarat early on August 18.
