Manchester City sign midfielder Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea

Manchester City announced on Tuesday that they have signed Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic on a 4 year contract. Although no financial information was made public, British media reported Manchester City paid Chelsea 25 million pounds ($31.87 million) for the midfielder, plus five million in add-ons.

“This is a brilliant move for me, and I cannot wait to get started with City,” Kovacic said in a club statement. “Anyone who has watched this team under (coach) Pep (Guardiola) knows how good they are – for me, they are the best in the world. The trophies they have won are clear for all to see, but they are also the best footballing side out there.”

He added, “To be joining this squad really is a dream for any footballer. I still have plenty of learning and developing to do, and I know under Pep’s management I can become a better player.”

The 29-year-old is City’s first signing after the team won the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League to complete a historic treble.

In 2018–19, Kovacic first transferred from Real Madrid to Chelsea on loan before making a permanent move and signing a 5 year contract. He assisted the West London team in winning the Europa League in 2018–19, the UEFA Super Cup in 2020–21 and the Champions League.
