Karim Benzema is expected to return to European football, with Real Madrid and Manchester United reportedly considering a loan deal for the rest of the season.
Benzema joined Al-Itiihad last summer, ending a stellar career with Real Madrid. His relationship with the Saudi Pro League club is said to have worsened after a 5-2 defeat against Al-Nassr in December last year.
Because many of the Al-Ittihad fans held him responsible for the loss, Benzema had to shut down his social media accounts. The 36-year-old, who joined Al-Ittihad in July 2023, has already scored 15 goals for the Saudi club.
Benzema reportedly left Jeddah without informing the club officials after the match against Al-Nassr, according to a media report in the Saudi media. As per reports, he was absent from a few training sessions last week.
As reported by Marca, his behaviour has irked Al-Itiihad manager Marcelo Gallardo, who has dropped Benzema from the team for a mid-season trip to Dubai this month.
According to Fichajes, Benzema is set to leave Saudi Arabia this month.
Aside from Real Madrid and Manchester United, Benzema’s former club Lyon is interested in bringing him back on loan.
Benzema played 148 matches in all competitions during his last four-season stay at Lyon, netting 66 goals and assisting 27 times.
