Manipur sexual assault case: Police makes fifth arrest; Protesters burn down house of another suspect

The Manipur police have arrested the fifth suspect in connection with the video which surface online on July 19, which showed two women paraded naked by a mob in the strife-torn state. The accused has been identified as 19-year-old.

The arrested men were remanded in 11-day police custody on July 21, as the protests against the sexual assault of two women became more intense. The protestors also burned the house of the second suspect in any angry retaliation.

Amid the stalemate in Parliament over holding a debate on Manipur violence, MPs of various opposition parties have planned to protest near the Mahatma Gandhi statue on July 24 in the Parliament complex. The protest is to press for the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on the issue in both houses.

The video of sexual assault went viral on Wednesday and it has been reported that the incident took place on May 4, a day after the violence erupted in Manipur.

Earlier, the women protesters had burned the house of the main suspect in the crime. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and PM Modi has promised to take strict action against the culprits of such “heinous” crime.
