Massive Protest Breaks Out at KIIT Bhubaneswar Following Nepali Student’s Tragic Suicide

A 20-year-old Nepali student studying mechanical engineering was discovered hanging from the ceiling fan of her dorm room on Sunday night, sparking protests at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology University in Bhubaneswar on Monday.

On Monday morning, hundreds of KIIT University (deemed) students blocked the main roads in front of the college, claiming that the officials ignored the deceased student’s pleas from a month ago. According to police sources, it seemed to be a suicide on the surface.

Advik Srivastava, the accused child who allegedly assisted in suicide, has been placed under arrest, according to Bhubaneswar DCP Pinak Mishra. The students said that Advik Srivastava had been harassing the victim for several months and that no assistance had been provided despite their complaints to the university’s international relations department.

After the event, the university’s Nepali students called for an extensive inquiry and the accused’s arrest. KIIT University sent out a notification requesting that all Nepali students leave the campus as tensions increased. “The university is closed for all international students from Nepal,” the notification said.

They are so instructed to leave the campus of the university as of today, February 17. Gyana Ranjan Mohanty, the registrar of KIIT University, told reporters that the victim was seeing the accused.

“Because of a tense relationship with her spouse, she took drastic measures while living at the hostel. Family members have been notified and her room shut. The accused has been arrested by the police,” Mohanty added.

According to the police, a charge of aiding and abetting suicide led to the accused’s arrest. However, a purported audio recording of a dialogue between the victim and the accused appeared on social media. “A young man was heard harassing and abusing a female in the video.”

“The institution ordered the Nepali students to leave the dorms immediately and go home in order to maintain order. The Nepali students have been sent home in consideration of the circumstances. Right now, everything is still peaceful,” the university continued. According to the Nepali students, they were compelled to leave without any travel plans.

A Nepali student said, “After being put onto the hostel buses, we were directed to the Cuttack train station and told to head home as soon as possible. The staff members came into the hostel, forced us to leave, and even struck people who weren’t leaving right away.”
