Novak Djokovic defeated Jannik Sinner in straight sets in the first semi-final of the day, taking the 36-year-old Serbian one step closer to a record 8th Wimbledon title.
Sinner, the eighth seed from Italy, fought hard in his first Grand Slam semi-final, but he was eventually defeated 6-3 6-4 7-6(4) by the reigning champion, who previously defeated Sinner at SW19 last year.
Djokovic’s triumph today marks his 45th consecutive win on Centre Court. He also becomes the first player in history to reach the finals of all 35 Grand Slam singles tournaments.
The Serbian was in complete control for the first two sets, easily defeating Sinner 6-3 6-4.
But the Italian was not going down without a fight, pushing Djokovic to his limit and the match ended in a heated tie-break, which Djokovic ultimately won to advance to his 9th final.
The win over Sinner extended Djokovic’s winning streak on Centre Court to 45 matches, with his last defeat on July 7 of 2013 against Andy Murray in the final. It is still the longest winning streak for any male or female player on the famous Centre Court since its inauguration in 1922. Roger Federer (2003-2008) and Helen Wills Moody (1927-1938) have each won 32 consecutive matches.
Djokovic will take on Carlos Alcaraz in the final on Sunday for arecord-equallin 8th Wimbledon title and an Open Era record 24th Grand Slam trophy.
