Odisha gets major boost as CM opens Bhubaneswar–Puri–Paradip economic corridor

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi launched the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri-Paradip Economic Regions (BCPPER) corridor on Saturday, which is part of Odisha’s Vision 2036 and 2047 strategy and corresponds with the Centre’s urban economic regions programme. Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Majhi stated that the region currently provides over 19% of Odisha’s economy, with a total economic size of approximately USD 22.38 billion by 2025.

He restated the government’s forecast that the integrated area will rise to a USD 500 billion economy by 2047 and become “a new star in the growth sky of India.” “We are connecting these four regions with a common growth plan,” Majhi explained, citing Bhubaneswar’s technology ecosystem, Cuttack’s commercial tradition, Puri’s cultural and tourism appeal, and Paradip’s port-centric logistics and industrial foundation.

Plans approved by the economic area include the construction of three ring roads totalling around 645 km to improve road connectivity between the business nodes. A 432-kilometer Capital Ring Road will connect Paradip to Puri via Tangi, Saptasajya, and Rameshwar, while additional inner and outer ring roads of 65 and 148 kilometres will be built around Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, respectively.

Rail infrastructure comprises proposed lines between Puri and Konark (about 32 km) and Konark to Bhubaneswar via Nimapara (roughly 70 km), which are projected to improve passenger and freight travel. The connectivity investments align with national programs such PM Gati Shakti and the City Economic Regions (CER) scheme, which includes the corridor and allocates ₹5,000 crore for phased implementation.

According to officials, significant factors under discussion are smart city extensions, industrial townships, and designated investment zones. For example, past ideas under the BCPPER strategy included plans for a 426-acre “New Cuttack City” with eco-parks and modern infrastructure to boost urban competitiveness and attract talent and capital.

With major economic bodies backing the corridor’s growth potential, NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog has projected that BCPPER could be critical to Odisha’s goal of a USD 500 billion economy by 2036 and a USD 1.5 trillion economy by 2047, subject to timely delivery of priority projects and policy reforms.
