Olympic medalist, Sushil Kumar’s position with Northern Railway is under jeopardy

Sushil Kumar, who had been on deputation with the Delhi government since 2015, had already received an extension for 2020 and was attempting to obtain one for 2021 as well.

Sushil Kumar’s appeal to the Delhi government to prolong his deputation by a year has been denied, and he has been returned to his original department, Northern Railway. Kumar, who had been on deputation with the Delhi government since 2015, had already received an extension for 2020 and was attempting to obtain one for 2021 as well.

The Delhi government handed Kumar’s paperwork to Northern Railway last week, noting that the state government had denied his plea for an extension. The state government also attached the First Information Report (FIR) linking Kumar’s identity to the death of a 23-year-old wrestler on May 4 after a skirmish at Chhatrasal Stadium. Since he was arrested by Delhi Police, he may potentially lose his employment with Northern Railway.

Kumar, a senior commercial manager with Northern Railway, was assigned by the Delhi government as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at Chhatrasal Stadium to help develop sports at the school level. “He sought for a one-year extension [again] last month, but the decision was still pending,” a Delhi government official said.

Northern Railway’s general manager, in collaboration with other top officials, including the legal department, will make a decision on the next course of action, next week. It’s a difficult issue because Kumar isn’t physically present in the workplace.   Kumar is not on board with them.  Since he is in the custody of the Delhi Police, they will have to double-check the guidelines to see what action should be done.

Kumar’s domination at the state government-run Chhatrasal Stadium, which is the wrestling powerhouse of North India, has ended now that he is no longer with the Delhi government. Kumar was recently elected president of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) since he worked in the education department of the Delhi government. He might lose that job as well, and he would be ineligible to run for president of SGFI in the future because he is not affiliated with the education department.

The renowned wrestler was detained by Delhi Police on Sunday in Mundka, on the outskirts of Delhi, for his involvement in the death of former international wrestler Sagar Dhankar.
