‘Oppenheimer’ finally overtakes ‘Barbie’ at the International Box Office

As “Barbenheimer” continues to dominate the box office, Oppenheimer has now surpassed Barbie in the global box office, due to another solid showing this past weekend.

Oppenheimer made $38.1 million between August 25 and 27, according to ScreenDaily, while Barbie earned $35.3 million internationally during the same three-day period. Oppenheimer’s box office success was boosted by two late releases in Europe last weekend, with the biographical thriller grossing $9.7 million in Italy and $882,000 in Greece in its first five days. Furthermore, Oppenheimer had a domestic lift as a result of moviegoers taking advantage of discounted tickets during National Cinema Day on August 27.

Oppenheimer and Barbie, which were released together on July 21, have been the primary focus of the cinematic world this summer, producing nearly $2 billion combined since their debut. Despite earning $1.34 billion globally since its debut, Barbie is on the verge of overtaking The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the highest-grossing film of 2023, Oppenheimer has held its own, earning over $778 million against its $100 million budget, placing fourth globally among this year’s top earners.

R-Rated Results

Not only did Oppenheimer top the global box office and take the top spot for the weekend, but this week the movie opened in China and is expected to have made an additional $11 million as of this writing, moving it up to second place behind both of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool movies in the list of highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time, right behind Todd Phillips’ DC Comics adaptation Joker, which stars Joaquin Phoenix.

Oppenheimer’s worldwide box office will likely go over $800 million in the coming days. The movie is playing in theatres now.
