RG Kar Case verdict: Mamata Banerjee is unhappy with the judgement

Following the discovery of a 34-year-old doctor who had been raped and killed at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Trinamool Congress administration came under intense fire.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated Thursday, just minutes after a city court sentenced Roy to life in jail, that Kolkata Police would have guaranteed the death penalty for the guilty party in the RG Kar rape and murder case, but the investigation was removed and turned over to the CBI.

“From day one, we called for the death penalty. We also demand it now. However, the court has ordered it. I am able to express the views of my party. Within 60 days, we guaranteed the death penalty in three cases. We would have guaranteed the death punishment long ago if the case had remained with us. I’m not familiar with the specifics. We were deprived of the case. We had stated that we would turn it over to CBI if we were unable to complete it. because fairness is what we seek,” said Banerjee.

After a 34-year-old doctor was discovered raped and killed in a seminar hall at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, the Trinamool Congress government was heavily criticised. The tragedy caused demonstrations across the country, and the Supreme Court had ordered the CBI to take over the probe into it amid claims of a hush-up by top state government officials.

Five months later, a court in Kolkata sentenced civic volunteer Sanjay Roy to life in prison, stating that the prosecution had not proven that the case qualified as “rarest of the rare” enough to justify the death penalty. The State was also directed by the court to give the doctor’s elderly parents Rs 17 lakh in financial support.

However, the pair stated that justice, not compensation, is what they desire. However, the judge cautioned them not to view the help as compensation, stating that they are legally entitled to it. Roy was not the only perpetrator of the crime, according to the victim’s parents and physicians, who are still protesting the atrocity.
