Slovakia coach confirms Denis Vavro and staff member test positive for COVID-19

Slovakia defender Denis Vavro and a member of the team’s coaching staff have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Slovakia’s head coach Stefan Tarkovic has confirmed that Denis Vavro and a staff member have tested positive for the coronavirus.

This news comes ahead of Slovakia’s match against Sweden in the ongoing 2020 European Championship. Slovakia will face Sweden in their Group E campaign on Friday, 18 June. These are reportedly the first positive cases for COVID-19 to have been announced since Euro 2020 started.

Stefan Tarkovic said Denis Vavro has no symptoms of the coronavirus and is self-isolating. However, he did not disclose the name of the coaching staff member who also contracted the virus. Testing for the virus took place at the team’s training base in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, two days after Slovakia’s first game of the tournament in the Russian city.

Slovakia opened their Group E campaign with a 2-1 victory over Poland in St Petersburg on Monday. The game against Sweden on Friday is also in St. Petersburg. Sweden players Dejan Kulusevski and Mattias Svanberg tested positive for the virus ahead of the tournament.
