The future of screen experiences, part 1: Inside Samsung’s Micro RGB TV, setting a new standard for next-generation displays

Samsung’s Micro RGB TV has already made waves by winning the CES 2026 Best of Innovation Award and being named one of TIME magazine’s “Best Inventions of the Year.” This groundbreaking television technology is expanding with the introduction of a 130-inch ultra-large model, setting new standards for next-generation displays.

The development of the Micro RGB TV involved adopting micro-size RGB LEDs as a backlight unit to enhance color expression and integrating AI technology for large displays. This project marked a series of industry firsts, as Samsung embarked on creating a new television category without any existing reference points.

In an interview with Insang Hwang from Samsung’s Visual Display Business Division, it was revealed that the mission of creating a completely new TV category required collaboration across all departments. The challenge lay in developing new technologies from scratch while defining the value for consumers. Hwang explained that they created a proprietary concept called ‘Micro RGB,’ which miniaturized the backlight unit to the micro level.

Central to the Micro RGB TV is its superior color reproduction. By using RGB LEDs for the backlight, the display achieves wide and accurate color reproduction. Hwang noted the ambition to achieve ‘100% BT.2020,’ the ultra-high-definition color standard defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Achieving this standard means that professional-level color reproduction can now be experienced on home televisions, representing a significant advancement in display technology.

Samsung’s goal was to translate advanced technology into an everyday viewing experience. They focused on making the TV’s superior color capabilities something users could naturally perceive. The Micro RGB TV features Micro RGB Color Booster Pro, which uses AI to enhance color expression in real-time, making vivid color performance accessible not only in HDR content but also in everyday viewing.

Additionally, the TV includes a Glare Free feature to ensure consistent color performance in various lighting conditions. The 130-inch model offers an immersive experience, with AI-powered picture quality technology maintaining image detail on the ultra-large screen. Enhanced sound and design features include a 160W 10.4.2-channel speaker system and a wall-mount design that integrates seamlessly with the space.

The Micro RGB TV is not just about technological advancement; it redefines how screens are experienced in daily life. Samsung aims to evolve its TVs into platforms that integrate with user lifestyles and preferences, offering limitless experiences and services.
