Toddler’s death sparks protest at Odisha hospital, CM announces ₹4 lakh compensation

Following the death of a one-year-old infant, a large-scale protest broke out at Capital Hospital here on Monday as his family members accused the hospital of medical malpractice and giving him the incorrect prescription. The infant was sent to the hospital on Sunday with fever and cold symptoms, according to the deceased’s family.

For a correct diagnosis, a physician recommended that they perform an echocardiography on Monday. When the infant boy’s health deteriorated, the family brought him back to the hospital at around three in the morning on Monday, according to the child’s mother. “The care of my child was ignored. “I want the doctor arrested and suspended,” she declared.

According to the family, the child’s condition deteriorated and he died soon after because the on-call doctor gave him the incorrect prescription. After the baby died, angry residents flocked to the hospital and accused the personnel of being careless. A large crowd rushed into the hospital grounds and chanted slogans calling for action against the treating physician despite police attempts to defuse the situation, according to a police officer.

The road that led from the Capital Hospital to the airport was later stopped by the demonstrators as well. They stopped protesting once the police and medical officials intervened. “After reviewing all the prescriptions, we have found that no wrong medication was prescribed,” said Amarendra Mohanty, Director of Health Services, in response to the accusation.

However, only a post-mortem examination can determine the reason of the patient’s death. The matter is being investigated objectively by us. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, in the meantime, offered his family ₹4 lakh in compensation from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund out of compassion and deepest sympathies to Ayushman Sahu’s family.
