Tokyo Olympics: Satwik-Chirag loses to world No.1 Sukamuljo and Gideon in second match

Indian shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a straight game by 0-2 loss to Indonesia’s Marcus Gideon Fernaldi and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in their second match at Tokyo 2020.

Indian shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a straight game by 0-2 loss to Indonesia’s Marcus Gideon Fernaldi and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in their second match at Tokyo 2020. The Indian pair of Satwik and Chirag was defeated by world number one pair of Indonesia by 21-13, 21-12 in just 32 minutes. Gideon and Sukamuljo are leading the group with two wins, while Satwik and Chirag are in second place.

In their opening match, Satwik and Chirag defeated world number three Chinese Taipei’s Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin by 21-16, 16-21, 27-25 in a tight match. The Chinese Taipei pair are third in the group and are in the running for the knockouts. Now, Satwik and Chirag will take on the British pair of Ben Lane and Sean Wendy, who have already crashed out of the race after losing their opening two matches, in their final Group A match.

The second match started with small rallies. Both the pairs were tied at 6-6, after which the Indonesia pair took a four-point lead till the break with five consecutive points. and after that Chirag took a medical time out on the score of 9-13. It looked like his toe was hurt. but when the match resumed, the Indonesian pair maintained their dominance and took a 1-0 lead in the match with points on the second game point.

The Indian pair played better in the second game to take a 6-3 lead but Gideon and Sukamuljo made comeback to make it 9-7 with four points in a row. Till the break Indonesian pair was leading by 11-8. The pair then forced Satwik and Chirag to commit mistakes and took a 15-10 lead. Gideon and Sukamuljo then added three more points to score 18-10 and made an easy win.
