The Kapoor Khandaan is the only filmy khandaan in Bollywood. India’s love affair with films started with Prithviraj Kapoor, and Raj Kapoor pulled out the true essence of films and acting. Rishi Kapoor was  the Khandaan’s third generation.

With a career spanning 50 years, the star had enthralled viewers.  From an immature youth infatuated with his school-teacher in Mera Naam Joker (1970) to an impish 90-year-old in Kapoor and Sons (2016), he had a wide range of roles. In the 1970s and 1980s, Rishi carved out a niche for himself with his romantic musical films. Here are some of the unknown and interesting facts about Rishi Kapoor.

1. First role

Rishi Kapoor, the son of Bollywood showman Raj Kapoor, began his career in the movies at a young age. His first presence on screen was as a child in Shree 420’s hit album Pyar Hua Iqrar Hua. After that, he played young Raju in Raj Kapoor’s Mera Naam Joker. For the role, he received the National Film Award for Best Child Artist.

2. Chocolate boy

Rishi Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor’s dad, was the original chocolate boy of Bollywood long before . With his endearing appearance, he was destined to be a romantic hero from the start. There was no turning back for adult Rishi after his debut in Raj Kapoor’s superhit romantic film Bobby. He is said to have appeared in over 100 romantic films.

 3. Nickname

Rishi was affectionately referred to as Chintu by his friends. He did, however, have another moniker. Rishi was known in Nigeria as “Mace,” which means “woman.” It’s not difficult to figure out why. In several of his films, he dressed as a lady.

4. Plenty of movies with wife

Rishi and his wife Neetu Singh had amazing onscreen chemistry before they formed an unbreakable relationship in real life. Khel Khel Mein, Amar Akbar Anthony, Kabhie Kabhie, Doosra Aadmi, among others were among the films in which the two appeared together. Rishi accidentally named Neetu Singh by her real name in one sequence of Amar Akbar Anthony. However, the error was purposefully left uncorrected, and the blunder can still be seen in the film.

5. Bought an award

Rishi disclosed in his 2017 book Khullam Khulla, Uncensored that he once purchased a Best Actor Award for Rs. 30,000 the year Bobby was released. He really don’t have to keep practising, though. All across his career, the veteran has received many awards, including the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

6. Rishi for ‘Darr’

Rishi was originally considered for the part of the obsessed antagonist in Yash Chopra’s Darr. However, at the time, the actor did not want to play a villain.
He was then provided Sunny Deol’s role, which he also declined. Rishi then proposed Shah Rukh Khan, his “smart and competent” Deewana co-star, for the part. And it was because of this that SRK was cast in the iconic role.

He took a break from acting in the 1990s, only to return with solid supporting roles in films like Do Dooni Char and Agneepath, among others. The veteran actor died in April  2020.
