Tottenham Hotspur has now reportedly approached Ernesto Valverde to take up their vacant managerial position. A lot of candidates are also on the reported target list.
Spurs’ search for a new manager continues after the sacking of Jose Mourinho almost 93 days ago. Jose Mourinho succeeded Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs but was sacked a week before the 2021 League Cup final against Manchester City owing to lacklustre performances. Ex-Spurs player Ryan Mason was appointed as interim manager until the end of the season.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been engaged in a prolonged search for a new manager with current Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino being reconsidered for a second stint at the club. Pochettino and PSG however rejected Spurs’ advances. Former Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte was also considered but Conte pulled out over disagreements on squad funds. Juventus Director of Football Fabio Paratici who previously worked with Conte at Juventus was also appointed as Director at Spurs in an attempt to lure him to London but this attempt failed. Paratici has since then been involved in the process to appoint a manager and former AS Roma manager Paulo Fonseca was rumoured to be his first target. However, talks with Fonseca broke down as Gattuso was reported as being available.
Now reports from England suggest that Spurs are in talks with Valverde to take over as manager at the English club. Valverde has notably managed Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona. He was sacked in January 2020 due to disappointing results and has since then been out of a job. Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag are also among the rumoured candidates.
Valverde is a keen photographer, whose work has been published and exhibited.
