Viswanathan Anand to take part in Croatia Grand Chess Tour

Viswanathan Anand will have his attribution in the Croatia leg of the Grand Chess Tour as it returns in 2021, which will be held in Zagreb starting from July 5 to July 12. Indian chess grandmaster and former world chess champion will be featured in the tournament as wildcard entry along with six others.

This championship is going to be the third leg of the 2021 Grand Chess tour.  Former world champion Garry Kasparov will also be participating as a wild card entry in the blitz section.

This event will be the first across-the-board tournament for the five-time world champion Anand (ELO rating 2753) in over a year as sporting schedules worldwide travel have been stopped due to the global spread of Coronavirus and government restrictions. During the period of Pandemic in 2020, he had helped India win a gold medal in the FIDE Online Chess Olympiad.

Alex Grischuk the Russian Grandmaster, No.1 in Azerbaijan and world No. 8 in the world Shakhriyar Mamedyarov recently won 1st place in the 2022 Superhet Chess Classic finishing 6.0/9, and Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave will also be in the fight.

Ian Nepomniachtchi from Russia will challenge Magnus Carlsen, who has entered the competition as a wild card like Anand, for the title of 2021 World Chess champion. This competition will look for 10 elite Grandmasters with a total prize fund of $150,000 for the winner after nine rounds of rapid chess and 18 rounds of blitz.
