Here’s everything you need to know about the documentary “Power”.
Official Synopsis
“In the United States, police have been granted extraordinary power over our individual lives. The police decide who is suspicious and who ‘fits the description.’ They define the threats and decide how to respond. They demand obedience and carry the constant threat of violence. Thousands of these interactions play out in our cities and towns every day, according to real and perceived ideas of criminality and threats to social order — as decided by the police. Police make the abstract power of the state real.”
What to expect from the documentary?
In the US, police officers make up a comfortable punching bag and are frequently the subject of activist ire due to their essential role in maintaining social order. I say this as someone whose city is still in shock over the death of a police officer shot by two criminals who should have been in jail but were released on bond due to a no-bail court decision. I recently watched the incredibly biassed and non-academic trailer for Netflix’s upcoming documentary Power. Under the guise of a “documentary,” Power on Netflix portrays police officers as essentially roving robbers looking for easy prey.
