Is Instagram down? More than thousands of users report issues with sending DMs

Thousands of users have reported difficulties sending messages and reading direct messages (DMs) on Instagram due to a major technical failure. Downdetector, a service outage tracking tool, reports that the problems started Tuesday at around 5:14 p.m.

The figures in Downdetector are derived from reports that users have submitted. The precise number of impacted users may differ. More than 2,000 reports have been made so far, suggesting that the Meta-owned photo-sharing website has experienced significant interruption. Users have turned to competing social networking sites, such as X (previously Twitter), to vent their annoyance and see if anyone else is having the same problems.

Instagram and its parent company, Meta, have not yet released an official statement regarding the outage, which seems to be ongoing. The reason for the technological issues is still unknown. For the latest information on the outage, users are encouraged to visit Downdetector and the Instagram status page.

To keep in touch in the interim, a lot of people are using different social media sites. Thousands of people in the US were disrupted by a broad outage that hit Facebook and Instagram on October 15. Over 12,000 people reported problems with Facebook at its height, while over 5,000 people reported problems with Instagram.

Early this year, a technological problem created an outage that affected hundreds of thousands of Facebook and Instagram users worldwide for over two hours. At the height of the outage, Downdetector reported over 550,000 Facebook interruptions and over 92,000 Instagram disruptions.
