A month after the horrific rape and murder of a doctor inside Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the case remains clouded by controversy and political accusations. The victim, known for her dedication and long working hours, tragically lost her life after a grueling 36-hour shift.
She reported to work at 10 a.m. on August 8 at the hospital’s OPD and was assigned to unit 2A, where she admitted six patients that day. She had lunch after 3 p.m. in the sleep room. She came in after 3 p.m. and had her food in the sleeping room next door where we usually eat. She was a little reserved but very focused,” a colleague stated. The colleague left the hospital at 4:30 p.m., instructing her to call him if any patient’s condition worsened.
The doctor continued working until midnight, took a round of the ward, and retired to the seminar hall at 2 a.m. She was found dead the next morning.
The investigation led to the arrest of Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata police civil volunteer, seen on CCTV entering the seminar hall at 4:03 a.m. He claimed the victim was already unconscious, but authorities believe he is misleading them.
The case took a controversial turn when allegations surfaced that the police attempted to bribe the victim’s parents to cover up the crime. This triggered protests, with the BJP accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of shielding the accused. Both parties have since clashed, but despite the uproar, justice for the victim remains elusive.
