Bengaluru Drenched: Heavy Rainfall Triggers City-Wide Waterlogging

Bengaluru was hit by severe waterlogging and traffic congestion on October 21 following heavy rainfall. The city received 62 mm of rain in 24 hours, leading to an ‘orange alert’ issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), warning of continued heavy rains in the next few hours.

In response, the Deputy Commissioner of Bengaluru Urban District, G Jagadeesh, declared a holiday for all anganwadis, private, and aided primary and high schools. The order was issued verbally, with an official notification pending. However, colleges offering degree, postgraduate, diploma, engineering, and ITI courses will remain open.

The announcement caused confusion among parents, many of whom had already sent their children to school before the declaration. Some private schools quickly shifted to online classes in anticipation of the rains. A parent, Shwetha H, voiced her frustration on X, stating: “Very bad management from both government and schools. All kids went to school, now came back.”

Motorists struggled with waterlogged streets in key tech corridors like Outer Ring Road and Sarjapur Road. Areas such as Bannerghatta Road, Jayanagar, Hosur Road, and Madiwala also faced severe flooding.

The traffic police advised motorists to use alternative routes, particularly avoiding the Panathur railway underpass, which was heavily flooded. While there has been a call for work-from-home arrangements, the state government has not yet issued an advisory for tech professionals.
