The makers of the upcoming historical drama Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, have decided to remove a controversial dance scene following backlash from political groups and history enthusiasts. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the film is based on the life of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and is slated for release on February 14.
The film’s trailer, released earlier this week, sparked criticism for depicting Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Maharani Yesubai dancing with the lezim, a traditional Maharashtrian musical instrument. Politicians and social media users condemned the scene, alleging it disrespected the historical figure.
On Monday, Utekar met Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray to discuss the issue. “His knowledge of history, especially about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is vast. Based on his suggestions, we will remove the scene. It was not our intention to hurt sentiments,” Utekar told reporters.
The director clarified that the scene was not essential to the story and that the team is committed to honoring Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. “This film is the result of four years of research. If any part of it appears inaccurate, we are willing to address it,” he said.
Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant welcomed the decision, expressing hope that it would resolve the controversy.Chhaava aims to celebrate the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and educate audiences about his contributions as a warrior and king.
