A cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea is predicted to bring significant rainfall to Kolkata and southern Bengal starting October 23. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued warnings of light to moderate rains, with some areas likely to experience heavier downpours between October 23 and 26. This weather system may intensify into a depression, and authorities are closely monitoring its development.
Currently, the cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above sea level over the central Andaman Sea. A low-pressure area is expected to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea by October 21, which could develop into a depression around October 23.
RMC weather scientist HR Biswas has cautioned that while the system may intensify, it is too early to confirm whether it will become a cyclone. However, widespread rainfall is expected across Bengal, particularly in Kolkata and southern regions.
District administrations have been placed on high alert, with the Bengal chief secretary instructing them to prepare relief materials for potential emergencies. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deeper Bay of Bengal from October 22 due to rough sea conditions, with winds expected to reach 35-45 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the weather system moves closer to the Bengal coast.
