Denzel Washington, the acclaimed actor known for his impressive career in film and television, has recently made a significant personal and spiritual commitment. On December 21, just one week before his 70th birthday, Washington was baptized at The First Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ in Eastern New York and was also licensed to train as a minister. The ceremony was streamed live on the church’s Facebook page, where Washington shared heartfelt words with the congregation, expressing his belief that if God could guide him, there’s nothing He can’t do for anyone. He reflected on a prophecy from Ruth Green, a woman who had once told him at the age of 20 that he would “travel the world and preach to millions of people.” At the time, Washington didn’t understand the significance of the message, thinking it meant he would follow his father’s path into ministry. Instead, his journey led him to acting, but now, it seems that prophecy is coming true in a different form.
During the ceremony, Washington’s wife, Pauletta, expressed her pride in her husband’s spiritual growth, calling him the “head of our house” and praising the example he set for their children. Washington’s decision to become a minister aligns with his earlier reflections on his faith, particularly in an essay he wrote for Esquire where he described how his relationship with religion has evolved over the years. Despite his fear of discussing religion in Hollywood, he’s now “unafraid” to speak openly about his beliefs, finding a sense of freedom in doing so.
Washington’s faith has always influenced his choice of roles, even in more villainous parts. He has said that in every story, even the darkest ones, he looks for the light. Although he has hinted at focusing more on behind-the-camera work and perhaps shifting to a new chapter in life, his commitment to his faith suggests that his path as a minister could play a larger role moving forward. Despite these changes, he isn’t retiring from acting, as there are still filmmakers he wants to collaborate with.
