India’s veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan has been announced as an Indian skipper for the upcoming limited-overs series against Sri Lanka.

India’s veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan has been announced as an Indian skipper for the upcoming limited-overs series against Sri Lanka. In the absence of regular skipper Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma, he has been assigned to lead the young Indian side for the white-ball game starting from July 13 against Sri Lanka.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday announced a 20-member squad to tour Sri Lanka in July and confirmed Shikhar Dhawan as a captain for the tour.

Reacting to the declaration Dhawan took down to Twitter, thanked his fans, and said he is blessed with the opportunity to lead India.

In his tweet, he quoted: “Humbled by the opportunity to lead my country. Thank you for all your wishes.”

Experienced fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be the vice-captain for the tour of Sri Lanka. The BCCI has also announced the names of four top performers of IPL for their maiden India call-up.

Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Chetan Sakariya, and Nitish Rana are the four top performers of IPL 2021, rewarded for a maiden call-up for the national team.

The tour will begin with three ODIs matches starting from July 13, followed by the same number of T20Is starting from July 21. All six matches will be played in R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
