Ex-Principal Sandip Ghosh faces renewed scrutiny over Molestation charges in Hong Kong

Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, already under a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe related to the alleged cover-up of a rape-murder case, now faces renewed scrutiny over a 2017 molestation charge in Hong Kong. The case, previously cleared by a Hong Kong court, involved accusations from a male nursing student who claimed Ghosh touched him inappropriately during a clinical attachment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

According to reports from The South China Morning Post, Ghosh, then a visiting doctor under an exchange programme, allegedly patted the student’s buttock and tried to touch his genitals in a changing room. The student also claimed Ghosh asked, “Do you like it?” following the incident. Ghosh, however, denied the allegations in court, stating the physical contact was accidental while demonstrating how to fix a shoulder dislocation.

He also clarified that his words were misinterpreted due to his accent, explaining that he said, “Do it like this,” and not “Do you like it” Ghosh further stated, “It was a complete misunderstanding. I never intended to touch him inappropriately. I was trying to teach the technique for handling a shoulder injury, and things got blown out of proportion.”

Despite being cleared in the Hong Kong case, Ghosh now faces separate allegations of corruption and a cover-up of the August 9, 2023, rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. CBI investigations have revealed that Ghosh may have siphoned off funds and made 84 illegal appointments during his tenure as principal.

The molestation charges, although resolved in court, have resurfaced amid ongoing CBI investigations, casting further shadows over Ghosh’s already tarnished reputation.
