Former Rajya Sabha MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, has advised the makers of the upcoming historical drama Chhaava to consult historians to ensure accuracy. The film, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, stars Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna and is slated for release on February 14, 2025.
Sambhajiraje praised the film for shedding light on the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj but expressed concerns over historical inaccuracies in the trailer. He revealed that director Laxman Utekar had shown him the trailer, and he requested a pre-release screening to verify the film’s authenticity. “I also offered to connect them with historians to address inaccuracies to ensure this significant story is presented authentically to audiences worldwide,” he stated.
Highlighting specific concerns, Sambhajiraje referred to a lezim dance sequence in the trailer, questioning whether such creative liberties align with the dignity of Sambhaji Maharaj’s portrayal. He emphasized the need for expert discussions on the appropriateness of such scenes.
The film’s trailer and individual posters, featuring Kaushal as Sambhaji Maharaj, Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai, and Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb, have generated significant excitement among fans. Produced by Maddock Films and featuring music by AR Rahman, Chhaava promises a grand cinematic experience.
The makers have yet to respond to Sambhajiraje’s suggestions, but his call for historical consultation has sparked important conversations about authenticity in historical films.
