Honoring the ‘Iron Man of India’: Sardar  Vallabhbhai Patel

On October 31, which is National Unity Day, let’s see how Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel shaped contemporary India. Sardar Patel, whose real name was Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel, was India’s first home minister and deputy prime minister.

A prominent figure in India’s fight for independence from the British, Patel was a statesman and barrister who led the Indian National Congress. Patel was born on October 31, 1875, and raised in Gujarat. As a lawyer, he had liberated a number of peasants from Kheda, Bardoli, and Borsad through a nonviolent civil disobedience movement.

He went on to become one of Gujarat’s most powerful politicians. Later on, he also supported the Quit India Movement, and he continues to be motivational today. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Home Minister after independence, was instrumental in bringing the country together and forming its character.

The Indian Princely States were challenged by the British to declare their independence under the Indian Independence Act of 1947. Pakistan was eventually created as a result of this legislation, which established the dominions of India and Pakistan.

Patel was instrumental in strengthening the All India Services, India’s steel framework, in addition to the enormous undertaking of uniting the country. He was known as the Iron Man of India. He played a key role in the creation of the contemporary all-India services system. He is known as the “patron saint of India’s civil servants” because of this.

Patel was instrumental in forming significant portions of the Constitution pertaining to basic and minority rights as the chairman of the Constituent Assembly’s Advisory Committee on basic Rights, Minorities, and Tribal and Excluded Areas. Additionally, he underlined that obligations and rights are two sides of the same coin.
