Jio starts 5G trials in Mumbai, will expand to other cities soon

All 5G related equipment used by the company was indigenously manufactured with the help of local partners.

Telecommunications company Reliance Jio has started 5G trials in Mumbai using its own technology and equipment developed in India itself. The development comes after Jio along with Airtel and Vodafone Idea(Vi) were allocated spectrum for 5G trial by the Indian government’s Department of Telecommunications(DoT). A source revealed to The Economic Times that Jio would also be starting trials in other Indian cities for which it is engaged with Samsung, Ericsson and Nokia.

It may be noted that Reliance Jio had applied to the government for starting 5G trials in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and the state of Gujarat. Recently, the DoT allocated spectrum to Jio, Airtel and Vi in the bands of 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz for starting trials for the fifth generation technology standard.

According to an executive at Jio, the company is using mid and mm-wave bands coupled with standalone architecture for the trials. The executive further added that all 5G related equipment was indigenously manufactured with the help of local partners.

The Mukesh Ambani owned telecommunications giant had recently announced that it had partnered with chipmaker Qualcomm to locally manufacture 5G equipment in the country.

Jio’s rival Airtel has also reportedly started a 5G trial in the Cyber Hub area of Gurgaon. The networks of both Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are already 5G ready.

The DoT has said that it aims to use 5G for purposes like telemedicine, augmented & virtual reality, drone-based agricultural monitoring, etc. The telecom department also wants to ensure that the benefits of 5G reach not just urban areas but semi-urban and rural settings as well.
