As Cyclone Dana approaches, Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport has ramped up its preparations to handle the potential impact of the severe storm, which is expected to hit the city and surrounding areas on October 24 and 25. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the cyclone could bring heavy rainfall and strong winds, affecting Kolkata and districts like Howrah, Hooghly, North 24-Parganas, and Jhargram.
In response, airport authorities have implemented a series of precautionary measures. These include thorough inspections of the airport’s infrastructure, ensuring that all systems are weather-proofed to minimize damage from the expected heavy rains and strong winds. Drainage systems are being checked to prevent flooding, while crucial installations, such as communication and power systems, are being serviced and reinforced.
Dr. Pravat Ranjan Beuria, the Director of Kolkata Airport, stated that standard operating procedures are being followed to maintain operational safety. Authorities are also working closely with the airlines to prepare for possible flight disruptions. “The potential impact on flight operations will depend on the situation after the cyclone makes landfall, but we are ensuring all contingencies are in place,” he said.
In addition, airport staff have been put on alert for emergency situations, and extra resources have been deployed to ensure a quick response to any damage or disruption caused by Cyclone Dana.
