Elizabeth Lynne Cheney, commonly known as Liz Cheney, was born on July 28, 1966, in Madison, Wisconsin. She is an attorney and politician who served as the congresswoman for Wyoming in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023. A lifelong Republican with strong neoconservative views, Cheney became widely known for her outspoken opposition to former President Donald Trump, particularly after the 2021 storming of the U.S. Capitol, which led her to support Trump’s second impeachment.

Cheney is the daughter of Dick Cheney, the 46th vice president and a prominent businessman, and Lynne Cheney, an author, scholar, and former talk show host. She graduated from McLean High School in suburban Washington, D.C. in 1984, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado College in 1988, and received a law degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1996.

Before pursuing law school, Cheney worked for the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and Armitage Associates LLP. After law school, her career included roles such as deputy assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs, heading the Iran-Syria Policy and Operations Group, and serving as a national co-chair for Fred Thompson’s 2008 presidential campaign. Cheney also founded the nonprofit organization Keep America Safe and worked as a contributor for Fox News.

In 2014, Cheney briefly ran for the U.S. Senate in Wyoming, challenging incumbent Mike Enzi, but quickly withdrew. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2016, succeeding her father’s former seat, a position he held from 1979 to 1989. In 2021, Cheney’s membership in the Wyoming Republican Party was revoked, and in 2022, she lost her bid for re-nomination to Harriet Hageman.

Cheney co-authored the 2011 memoir In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir and the 2015 book Exceptional: Why the World Needs a Powerful America with her father. She also published Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning in 2023.

She married Philip Perry, an attorney and former political appointee in the George W. Bush administration, in 1993. Perry held several key positions, including acting associate attorney general for the Department of Justice and general counsel for both the Office of Management and Budget and the Department of Homeland Security during Bush’s presidency.
