Anuja, a movie supported by Priyanka Chopra and Guneet Monga, has received a nomination in the Best Live Action Short Film category, meaning that India will have representation at the Oscars in 2025. Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang revealed the 97th Academy Awards nominations Thursday.
Only five films have advanced to the competition for the Best Live Action Short Film prize out of the 180 that qualified. Alien, I’m Not a Robot, The Last Ranger, and A Man Who Would Not Remain Silent are among the other nominees, along with Anuja.
Guneet has received three Oscar nominations. Her previous Oscar-winning films, Period: End of Sentence and The Elephant Whisperers, elevated Indian cinema to a glorious level. The 2025 Oscars will be hosted by Conan O’Brien for the first time. On March 2, the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles will host the 97th Academy Awards.
The title girl, who is nine years old, and her older sister, Palak, work in a garment factory in the back alley. The story follows the young heroine as she must make a choice that will affect her family and her destiny. The movie is “a heartfelt tribute to the resilience and untold stories of working children,” according to Adam J. Graves.
Adam J. Graves serves as its director. Netflix will stream the movie. Suchitra Mattai, Adam’s wife, produced it. Priyanka Chopra, Mindy Kaling, and Academy Award winner Guneet Monga are among the supporters of the live-action movie.
Shine and the Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT), a nonprofit organisation that was established by Mira Nair’s family to assist working and homeless children, collaborated on the film. Starring in it are Nagesh Bhosle, Sajda Pathan, and Ananya Shanbhag. Anuja’s release date has not yet been disclosed.
