Petrol costs more than Rs103/litre in Mumbai after latest hike in fuel prices

After a one-day relief, petrol and diesel prices were hiked again on Friday by oil companies. While the price of petrol was hiked by 26-27 paise, diesel prices rose by 28-30 paise in the country. With the latest increase, the petrol was being sold in the metro city of Mumbai for Rs 103.08, a historic high for the fuel.

It may be recalled that the prices of both the fuels had been kept unchanged on Thursday, 17th June. However, the relief for consumers lasted only a day. After taking into account today’s increase in price, the price of petrol and diesel in the national capital Delhi stood at Rs 96.93 per litre and Rs 87.69 per litre respectively.

In Mumbai, petrol prices touched the high of 103.08 per litre while diesel retailed at Rs 95.14.

Among all metro cities, petrol is the cheapest in Kolkata, selling at Rs 96.84 per litre. The price of diesel in Kolkata stands at Rs 90.54 per litre.

After the latest price rise, petrol is costing consumers Rs 98.14 per litre in Chennai while diesel is priced at Rs 92.31.

The prices of petrol and diesel vary across the country as different states impose different rates of excise duty on the two petroleum products. The per litre price of petrol has already crossed the Rs 100 mark in several states including Rajasthan, Maharashtra, MP, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana. In the Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan, both petrol and diesel prices have now crossed the Rs 100 mark.

The oil companies also change petrol and diesel prices in accordance with the global rate of crude oil. The per-barrel price of crude oil had almost touched the $75 mark recently due to an upsurge in demand and sanctions on Iranian oil.
