Prime Video’s video game-inspired anthology series locks down second season despite mediocre reviews

The idea of short animated stories set within iconic gaming franchises sounds like a dream come true for fans, and while Prime Video’s Secret Level had a mixed reception in its first season, there’s hope for improvement with its renewal for a second season.

Secret Level launched its first episodes on December 10, 2024, offering animated tales from popular games like Armored Core, Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer 40K, and a quirky Pac-Man episode. The show received a mixed response, with some episodes, especially those based on Armored Core and Warhammer 40K, being well-received, while others, like the Pac-Man story, were criticized, with some viewing it as a promotional tool for the upcoming Shadow Labyrinth game. Despite this, the show was a hit for Amazon, becoming the most-watched animated series debut on Prime Video, prompting the green light for a second season.

Critically, Secret Level has had an okay reception, holding a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a much higher audience score of 83%. This discrepancy in reviews isn’t surprising, given the wide range of gaming franchises featured in the show and how different fandoms might react.

As for the second season, it remains to be seen whether it will revisit the same gaming worlds or explore new ones. However, fans can look forward to more appearances from big-name actors, with Keanu Reeves, Kevin Hart, and Arnold Schwarzenegger making cameo appearances in season one. The involvement of Tim Miller, known for directing Deadpool and working on Love, Death & Robots, lends the show an experienced hand in the animated anthology genre, which has helped shape its unique appeal.

While it’s too early to know exactly when season two will drop, expect more details to surface in 2025. In the meantime, all 15 episodes of season one are available to stream on Prime Video, totaling about 110 minutes of content—plenty to dive into while you wait for what’s next.
