Rajkumar Hirani Reveals PK Was Initially Titled ‘Tully’; Shares Why the Name Was Changed

Bollywood’s 2014 comedy-drama PK, starring Aamir Khan, remains one of the industry’s most beloved films. However, in a recent interview with ETimes, director Rajkumar Hirani disclosed that the film was initially titled Tully. Hirani explained the reason for the title change, stating, “It felt too slangy, so we decided to call it PK.”

The name PK ties directly to Aamir Khan’s character in the film. Hirani elaborated that the title emerged from recurring scenes where people questioned the character’s odd behavior, asking, “Pi ke hai kya? (Are you drunk?).” This phrase led the character to believe his name was PK, aligning perfectly with his absurd yet poignant remarks throughout the movie.

Released on December 19, 2014, PK starred Anushka Sharma, the late Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla, and Sanjay Dutt. It was lauded for its humor, performances, and unique storyline, achieving both critical acclaim and commercial success.

Hirani, whose last film Dunki (2023) starred Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu, also shared updates on the much-awaited Munna Bhai 3. He admitted to struggling with the script, saying, “Even I want to make one more, but I’ve been generally struggling with a script for a long time.”

Meanwhile, Aamir Khan will return in Sitaare Zameen Par, slated for a 2025 release, alongside Genelia Deshmukh and Darsheel Safary. Directed by RS Prassana, the project has already generated excitement among fans.
