Happy Raksha Bandhan to everyone! This year, we are celebrating Rakhi on August 19, 2024. It is not only a festival; it is also an emotion for siblings as they wrap rakhis around each other’s wrists to convey their love and strengthen their bond. The brothers swear to protect their sisters for the rest of their lives, while sister sisters make delicious delicacies for them. Apart from being culturally significant, Raksha Bandhan also offers delight to sisters when they visit their brothers’ houses and brothers purchase them unique gifts.
Origin of Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan is rooted both Hindu mythology and historical stories. One of the most beloved stories is that of Draupadi and Lord Krishna. According to legend, when Draupadi tore a piece of her sari to bandage Krishna’s bleeding wrist during a battle, Krishna was moved by her gesture and promised to protect her. This deed inspired a tradition in which brothers promise to protect their sisters in exchange for the rakhi, a sacred thread placed around their wrist.

Another legend tells about Queen Karnavati of Chittor sending a rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun in order to beg protection against the invading Bahadur Shah of Gujarat. Humayun, moved by her plea, instantly set out to defend her country, embodying the festival’s ethos of fraternity and unity.
Rituals of Raksha Bandhan
The Raksha Bandhan celebrations begin with siblings following typical rituals. Sisters diligently prepare for the event, selecting rakhis that represent their fondness and ceremoniously wrapping them around their brothers’ wrists. The practice is followed by wishes for their safety and success. Brothers respond with presents and pledges of lifetime safety and well-being.
