Red Alert in Telangana and other districts of Andhra Pradesh; Government shuts Schools and Colleges

A severe depression off the coast of Andhra Pradesh has caused heavy rain to cover most of Telangana. One person has died and the state administration has issued a nationwide alert.

As a precaution, the government has declared Monday a vacation for elementary and secondary schools in the Hyderabad district due to the ongoing downpour that started on Friday evening. Up to September 3, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange advisory for several districts and a red alert for almost half of the state, alerting people to possible flooding and landslides.

In Komaram Bheem Asifabad district, Tekam Ganesh, an animal grazer, was washed away in floodwaters while attempting to cross the overflowing Bandlavagun river in Bondaguda, Asifabad mandal. Authorities located and found his body.

Heavy rainfalls have badly devastated several districts. Authorities in Nagarkurnool district have issued landslip warnings near the Uma Maheswara shrine, as floodwaters continue to rise. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) had substantial rainfall, with Hayathnagar receiving 18.5 mm, Saroornagar receiving 17.5 mm, and Secunderabad receiving 16.2 mm, according to the Telangana State Development & Planning Society (TGDPS).

Extremely heavy rain was experienced in the Suryapet district; Huzurnagar recorded 248.3 mm. Similarly, there were heavy downpours in the districts of Mulugu and Khammam, with total rainfall of 216.3 mm and 188.3 mm, respectively.

The water levels in rivers and reservoirs are being regularly monitored by the local authorities. The Yenkiryala creek overflowed in the Rangareddy district due to intense rain, destroying the road connecting the villages of Kondurg and Nawabpet. The Madgul Chittampalli stream in Vikarabad also rose significantly, causing worries about possible floods.

A number of more districts have been impacted. Floodwaters inundated Jadcherla Government Hospital in Mahbubnagar, impeding staff and patient access. A number of communities in the Nalgonda area were left without access when temporary bridges collapsed.
According to the IMD, there will be further downpours in areas like Karimnagar, Peddapalli, and Bhadradri Kothagudem during the span of the next several days.

Telangana has already received 627.6 mm of rainfall this season; in the days to come, this amount is anticipated to grow further. In an effort to lessen the effects of the severe weather and guarantee the safety of the local population, authorities are nevertheless on high alert.
