A team from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday reached the residence of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, to conduct a search operation. The search is part of an ongoing investigation into financial irregularities at the medical college. Further details on the search are awaited.
This development follows Mr. Ghosh’s remand to judicial custody by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on September 10, along with three others, until September 23. The CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch arrested Mr. Ghosh on September 2 on charges of corruption and financial mismanagement. These allegations surfaced after a single Bench of the Calcutta High Court ordered the CBI to investigate the case.
On August 24, the CBI officially registered an FIR against Mr. Ghosh, marking the beginning of a deeper probe into the corruption charges. In light of the investigation, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Kolkata suspended Mr. Ghosh’s membership.
Additionally, Mr. Ghosh underwent a second round of polygraph tests on August 26 in connection with another investigation involving the rape and murder of a woman doctor at the institution. The doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, raising further concerns about safety and conduct at the institution.
The Calcutta High Court has given the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report on both the financial irregularities and the tragic death of the trainee doctor, with the deadline set for September 17.
