RG Kar Case: Ex-principal Sandip Ghosh manipulates House Staff selection in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has informed a court that Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, influenced the recruiting procedure for medical house staff by picking doctors of his choice and breaking hospital standards.

Dr. Ghosh allegedly implemented a non-transparent procedure of interviews for home staff selection, with no interview panel in existence. Only final marks were released, and many qualified contenders were left off the final list.

The CBI started an inquiry into financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital following the horrifying rape and murder of a doctor on August 9 in the hospital’s seminar room. Dr. Ghosh was arrested last month during the probe. The agency accused him of awarding hospital contracts to close associates, including his security guard’s wife, Nargis, who received a canteen contract through her company, Eshan Cafe, in compromise of regular procedures.

According to the CBI, Nargis received the contract in a predetermined order, with handwritten bid amounts on paperwork. Dr. Ghosh even returned the non-refundable caution money to the company. The agency also accused him of maintaining a “criminal nexus” with the other co-accused for personal advantage.

Two vendors who formerly worked with Dr. Ghosh at Murshidabad Medical College were also arrested. They received hospital contracts because of their proximity to Ghosh. The CBI reported that this criminal network resulted in considerable financial losses for the government. Dr. Ghosh’s security guard was also involved in the unlawful sale of the hospital’s biomedical waste.
