Junior doctors at Kolkata Medical College have lodged at least 46 threat complaints against three associates of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The accused Dr. Birupaksha Biswas, Dr. Avik De, and Dr. Ranjit Saha are alleged to have intimidated junior doctors residing in the boys’ hostel, issuing threats of severe consequences.
The complaints follow the recent arrest of Ghosh, who is currently facing charges related to financial irregularities during his tenure at RG Kar Hospital. His arrest came after a trainee doctor was raped and murdered on the hospital premises, sparking widespread protests and demanding justice. Ghosh, who served as the hospital’s principal from February 2021 to September 2023, was transferred but managed to regain his position briefly in late 2023.
An FIR has been filed against the three aides, with the complainants claiming they were threatened as part of ongoing harassment linked to Ghosh’s influence. Police are investigating the matter, and further legal action is anticipated. The incidents have added to the tension within the medical community, with junior doctors demanding safety and protection from intimidation in the wake of the complaints.
The case continues to unfold, drawing attention to the working environment in Kolkata’s medical institutions amid the ongoing investigation into Ghosh’s alleged fraud.
