RG Kar case verdict: Sanjay Roy sentenced to lifetime imprisonment

Sanjay Roy, who was found guilty of raping and killing a 31-year-old trainee physician at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was sentenced to life in prison and fined ₹50,000 by the CBI court in Sealdah, Kolkata, on Monday.

The judge of the CBI court decided that Sanjay Roy’s crime was not considered the “rarest of rare” and, as a result, he was not given the death penalty. The CBI court has also directed the West Bengal government to compensate the family of the postgraduate trainee doctor with ₹17 lakh.

On Saturday, the CBI court in Kolkata’s Sealdah declared Sanjay Roy as the lone guilty in the RG Kar rape and murder case, which occurred on the intervening night of August 8 and 9, 2024. CCTV footage, phone signals, and forensic evidence all supported Sanjay Roy’s conviction.

Blood and skin samples taken from the fingernails of the RG Kar rape and murder victim matched scratch injuries on Roy’s body, and hair samples taken from the crime scene—the seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital—also matched Sanjay Roy’s DNA. On August 9 of last year, a 31-year-old junior physician was raped and killed at the state-run RG Kar hospital in Kolkata. The body of the victim was discovered in the hospital’s seminar room.

The trial in the RG Kar rape and murder case opened in a Kolkata court on November 11, three months after the crime. The CBI has demanded “maximum punishment” for Roy after taking over the investigation from the Kolkata Police at the direction of the Calcutta High Court. January 9 marked the conclusion of the trial.

Sanjay Roy, who wears a Rudraksha necklace and asked why it did not break if he had committed the crime of rape, repeatedly asserted that he was being falsely implicated and that he was only doing as “IPS officers” instructed him while the CBI court was rendering its decision.
