Saurabh Shukla calls out hype culture; says audiences value real performances

For Saurabh Shukla, success in cinema has little to do with outward displays of wealth or carefully curated public images. Speaking in an interview with HT City, the seasoned actor shared that an artist’s true worth lies in their work, not in the symbols often associated with stardom today.

Having spent over two decades in the industry, Shukla observed that conversations around success have increasingly shifted towards lifestyle markers such as luxury cars and public perception. While he admits to enjoying premium cars himself, he made it clear that these preferences are personal and should not define his identity as an actor. According to him, blurring the line between personal indulgences and professional merit creates a flawed understanding of success.

The 63-year-old also weighed in on the growing influence of PR machinery and hype culture. He acknowledged that publicity plays a role in informing audiences and promoting projects, but maintained that it cannot substitute genuine talent. Audiences, he noted, ultimately connect with performances on screen rather than constructed images.

Unlike many contemporaries, Shukla revealed that he has never relied on a constant personal PR strategy, choosing instead to focus on his projects. Even without aggressive promotion, he believes his work has consistently found its audience. Recently directing Jab Khuli Kitab, the actor concluded that recognition built on craft is far more lasting than one built on hype.
