All social media companies are welcome to do business in India: Ravi Shankar Prasad on new online media rules

In a press conference by the Press Information Bureau, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that all social media is welcome to do business in India.

The OTT platforms will have to comply with the rules and regulations issued by the government to avoid misuse of data and content.

“All social media companies are most welcome to do business in the country. They have done a good job in empowering the ordinary Indians and their platform has often been used to cast aspersion on most pressing issues. I would like to say that the social media platform should not be misused. The social media platform will have to comply with the rules and regulations issued by the government in this regard,” he said.

He addressed the fact social media has been used to spread fake news and the government will share rules and guidelines to avoid the issue.

He also mentioned that “Content involving nudity, morphed pictures of women have to be removed in 24 hours.”
