Filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh has spoken about the long legal ordeal he faced following allegations of plagiarism linked to his 2016 film Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh. Addressing a session organised by the Screenwriters Association of India in Mumbai, the director described the experience as a “nightmare” that stretched over nearly a decade.
The issue began soon after the film’s release, when a complaint was filed claiming that the story had been copied from a script titled Sabak. At the time, Ghosh said he did not take the accusation seriously, believing there was no basis to it. However, he admitted that this initial approach turned out to be a mistake as the matter escalated into a criminal case.
Reflecting on the situation, the filmmaker said the case gradually intensified, with new claims surfacing over time. He revealed that the complainant alleged meetings and interactions that never happened, making it difficult for him to prove otherwise. The prolonged legal battle, according to Ghosh, became increasingly stressful as the allegations grew more complex.
The director credited the association’s dispute resolution panel for examining both scripts and finding no similarity between them. This finding later played a crucial role when the matter reached the Supreme Court of India, which ultimately dismissed the case earlier this year, terming the accusations unsubstantiated.
With the ruling in his favour, Ghosh said he feels relieved, bringing closure to a chapter he described as both exhausting and unsettling.
