A suspicious bag abandoned at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Thursday triggered a bomb scare, leading to an immediate security response. The bag was found near the portrait of a junior doctor, who was tragically raped and murdered on the hospital’s premises on August 9. The incident has kept the medical college in the headlines, with junior doctors across the state staging protests demanding justice for the victim.
The bag, which appeared new with a price tag still attached, was spotted on a makeshift stage set up on the campus, which had been used by protesters to pay tribute to the deceased doctor. CISF personnel, who were assigned to secure the hospital as per the Supreme Court’s directive, quickly cordoned off the area and evacuated the vicinity.
The bomb disposal squad is expected to arrive soon to inspect the bag. As of now, security forces have no information on how the bag was left at the site. The protest, which had recently shifted to the West Bengal Health Department’s office at Swasthya Bhawan in Salt Lake, left the hospital premises largely empty at the time of the discovery.
Meanwhile, junior doctors continue their sit-in protest at Swasthya Bhawan, demanding the removal of alleged corrupt officials, alongside their demand for justice for the young medic. A significant police presence has been deployed at Salt Lake, and traffic around Swasthya Bhawan has been regulated to manage the ongoing protests.Despite the Supreme Court’s plea for doctors to return to duty, the protests remain strong, with no signs of resolution.
