‘The boy and the heron’ soon to release on Netflix except Japan and US

Here’s everything you need to know about “The boy and the heron.”

About the movie

The movie debuted in Japanese theatres in 2023. The narrative centres on young Mahito Maki during the Pacific War. After his mother dies, Mahito relocates to a rural area. He finds an abandoned tower there. It’s one of the most expensive animated productions in Japan to date, according to the studio. This was the first film that Miyazaki had written and directed in ten years. The movie brought in more than $85 million only in Japan. With an astounding $12.8 million in theatre ticket sales on its first weekend, the movie also became the highest-grossing movie of the year in North America.

Know the Makers

Prior to its debut, Hayao Miyazaki’s film was rumoured to be his last, however it appears that this opinion has since evolved. On March 10, 2024, the movie was awarded Best Animated Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. This is Miyazaki’s second Oscar-winning film, following 2003’s Spirited Away.

Release Date Assumption

The global rollout of Netflix’s exclusive agreement with Studio Ghibli has been announced. 22 new films have been added by the streaming behemoth to its global catalogue, and they will all be accessible on Netflix anywhere. All regions will have access to these films, except the US and Japan. With the recent acquisition of the streaming rights for Hayao Miyazaki’s semi-biographical fantasy picture, Max is now the only place in the US where Studio Ghibli films can be found. The Boy and the Heron will soon have a Netflix release date.
