New Zealand captain Tom Latham expressed his joy after his team pulled off a historic 3-0 series sweep over India, marking the first time in decades that India has faced a whitewash at home in a Test series of at least three matches. New Zealand secured the series with a 25-run win in the third Test in Mumbai.
“We talked about backing ourselves after each match, and achieving this here in Mumbai, on a challenging pitch, is satisfying,” Latham said. He attributed the success to the team’s ability to adapt to different playing conditions and highlighted the “all-round, great team effort” that allowed them to overcome India on their home turf.
The series win was largely shaped by individual performances, including Ajaz Patel’s stunning 11-wicket haul in Mumbai. Ajaz, who was named Player of the Match, adapted his bowling strategy based on the conditions and credited his success to staying consistent and using his skills wisely.
Daryl Mitchell and Will Young also played key roles. Mitchell’s steady 82 in the first innings of the final Test and his eight catches in the slip position contributed significantly. Young, stepping in for Kane Williamson, delivered crucial runs throughout the series, earning him the Player of the Series award.
Reflecting on New Zealand’s approach, Latham mentioned, “We’ve been more aggressive with the bat and proactive with the ball, understanding how India plays and sticking to our plan.”
The series win is another high point for New Zealand, adding to their recent T20 World Cup win in the UAE. Mitchell summed up the team’s pride, saying, “We’re just a bunch of Kiwis taking on the world. We know how good India is, and we’re proud of our group today.”
