Virat Kohli: “Trust, respect” define the bonding of his with captain cool, MS Dhoni

Kohli remarked during an Instagram live with Ravichandran Ashwin last year that Dhoni was instrumental in his becoming the national team captain.

Virat Kohli is now quarantined in Mumbai ahead of India’s six-test trip to England, which begins on June 18 and includes the World Test Championship final against New Zealand. Kohli held a question-and-answer session with his followers on Instagram on Saturday, answering many queries.

A fan requested Kohli to explain his relationship with MS Dhoni, the captain cool, in two words. Kohli, who has repeatedly voiced his appreciation for Dhoni, responded, “Trust, respect.” Kohli was also questioned if he prefers criticism or praise, to which he responded admirably, saying that he prefers constructive criticism and real praise provided they are not phoney.

Kohli remarked during an Instagram live with Ravichandran Ashwin last year that Dhoni was instrumental in his becoming the national team captain. “I’ve always been a believer in accepting responsibility. It was all about wanting to play after my debut for India; it was all about being in the Indian XI all the time,” Kohli has stated previously.

“Then, as your interest in the game grows, you begin to communicate with the captain on a regular basis. I was always in MS’ ear, talking various strategies,” Kohli continued. “I believe he has a lot of faith in me to succeed after him. I believe he had a significant part in it (becoming the captaincy),” he concluded.

Kohli will shortly board a plane to England with the rest of India’s Test team for a nearly two-month tour. In the inaugural World Test Championship final, India will meet New Zealand at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton from June 18 to 22, with June 23 set aside as a reserve day.
