Why Ashwin is one of the best bowlers, Ian Chappell responded to Sanjay Manjrekar

In response to Sanjay Manjrekar’s comments, Australian legend Ian Chappell highlighted why Ashwin is currently one of the best bowlers, citing Joel Garner as an example.

Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar recently expressed his displeasure with senior India off-spinner R Ashwin’s status as an all-time great due to his performance in the SENA countries of South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia.

Furthermore, he noted that Ravindra Jadeja, Ashwin’s counterpart in India, has matched him shoulder to shoulder. He also stated that Axar Patel took 27 wickets in three matches during India’s 3-1 Test series win against England at home earlier in 2021, while Ashwin took 32 wickets in four games.

Manjrekar made the remarks while on an ESPNCricinfo program. In the same panel, Ian Chappell, an Australian legend, argued and disagreed with Manjrekar, giving West Indies legend Joel Garner as an example.

According to Chappell, Garner did not have lots of five-wicket hauls to his name, it did not mean that he did not create an impact and that a lot of it had to do with his teammates’ ability to take wickets as well. Chappell also highlighted that Axar had left the English batsmen perplexed because their primary concentration had been on Ashwin.

Ashwin has a fantastic track record in Test. He has 409 wickets at an average of 24.69 in 78 appearances, with 30 five-wicket hauls in innings and seven 10-wicket hauls in Test matches. He’s also India’s fourth-highest wicket-taker, trailing Harbhajan Singh by nine wickets, Kapil Dev by 26 wickets, and Anil Kumble by 211 wickets.
